At the Gassenwirt, every day starts with a yummy breakfast with first-class South Tyrolean products, such as home-made bread from the local bakery or baked in the wood-fired oven by our host Andreas, South Tyrolean speck and cold cuts from our own smokehouse, alpine butter from the farm Winterwegerhof, freshly squeezed juices with seasonal fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, crispy muesli and creamy yoghurt. In the evening we serve fresh salads and dishes with selected local products from the surrounding farms - for an extra portion of freshness on your plate!

Tour 1: The cosy one Pusterbike Cycle Path

Along flowering meadows, lush green meadows and picturesque mountain villages
The Pusterbike Cycle Path leads from Chienes to Lienz in Austria. With an 83 km route and an altitude of only 500 m, it is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. The route leads along the river bank, through meadows and forests, with plenty of places to rest and several train stations to shorten the way.
TIP: Plan some time for sightseeing and visit the charming villages and small towns along the route.

The most popular routes:
San Candido – Lienz cycle route:
This route takes you slightly uphill along the rushing Drau river from San Candido across the state border into East Tyrol and on to the Dolomite town of Lienz, a very popular shopping town.
Route length: 44 km

San Candido - Brunico cycle path:
Through flowering meadows, green fields and past rustic farms, the route leads from San Candido via Dobbiaco, Villabassa, Monguelfo Tesido and Valdaora to Brunico.

Tour 2: The cultural one Circular tour of Brunico

A comfortable bike tour
for shopping and culture enthusiasts
From Hotel Gassenwirt we cycle east along the Pusterbike trail past San Lorenzo di Sebato to Brunico. Brunico’s historic city alley with its colourful facades and small shops invites you to take a pleasant stroll. Numerous cafés will tempt you to enjoy homemade treats and small bistros will serve you delicious appetizers. Culture enthusiasts will be blown away by the MMM Ripa at Bruneck Castle that reflects on cultures, religions and tourism activities of the global mountain civilisations in the lower courtyard of the 13th century castle.
The route continues along the cycle path to the Folklore Museum in Dietenheim, where history is revived showing the environment of the everyday life of the rural population of the past.
Via Villa S. Caterina, San Giorgio, Grimaldo, we reach Falzes and Issengo, home of the mountain pine oil distillery and the Bergila herb garden. A unique experience before returning to the Gassenwirt!

Tour 3: The scenic route Rodengo Alpine Pasture trail

Starting from the Gassenwirt we head towards Mantana/Montal and follow the directions to Ellen. Up to the "Kreuzner" parking area, the road leads quite steeply past several farms... not for the faint-hearted! Now we follow the "Rastnerhütte" markings along the forest path until we reach the sunny high plateau. We stop for lunch at one of the many rustic alpine huts and enjoy the magnificent view over the Odle Peaks, Sass de Putia and the impressive Val Pusteria mountain scenery. We cycle across the lush green alpine meadows of the high plateau to Rodengo and follow the cycle path from Rio di Pusteria back to Hotel Gassenwirt. What could be nicer than relaxing in the Gassenwirt wellness area after an eventful bike day? For soothing wellness moments, you can pamper yourself in the various saunas and even the most tired calves will feel more relaxed than ever before!

Tour 4: The pleasure cycle route Ahrntal Valley tour

Pure biking pleasure!
The tour leads us from the Gassenwirt to Brunico, right into the Ahrntal Valley. On the way we stop at the Thara pond and enjoy an aperitif on the sunny lake terrace. Before we reach Campo Tures, we pass the unusual "Goasroscht", a goat cheese dairy with farm shop and small bistro. After a hearty snack and a frozen yoghurt, of course 100% made of goat milk, it is worth taking a detour to Taufers Castle with its small castle café. Adrenalin junkies can swing down into the valley on the fly-line along the Riva/Reinbach waterfalls. Still not enough biking pleasure? Then continue biking to Kasern/Casere, to the end of the valley… it’s well worth it!

Lake Braies

Tour 5: The demanding one Dolomites Tour

Braies Valley and the pearl of the Dolomite Lakes
From Hotel Gassenwirt we drive to the herb garden Bergila. From there a challenging trail leads us through the forests to Brunico, following the Pusterbike Cycle Path along the Rienz river to Monguelfo-Tesido. We enter right into the heart of the idyllic Braies Valley, till we reach the pearl of the Dolomites, Lake Braies, where the Croda del Becco peak reflects in the shimmering emerald-green water. Let your soul dangle while taking a small rowboat tour on the lake. The brave ones even dare to jump into the ice-cold and crystal-clear water! We cycle back taking the same route to the Gassenwirt, where we end our exciting day with a refreshing "Boscofresco".

Tour 6: The Challenging route Fanes Circuit

Spectacular tour into the legendary realm of Fanes
The tour takes us through Casteldarne and Montana, Maria Saalen, to San Vigilio di Marebbe. The charming mountain village is situated in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park with a breath-taking view of the surrounding mountains. Through the dreamlike landscape along the St. Vigil stream, we reach the Pederü mountain inn and along a winding gravel road we get to the Fanes Hut, where delicious Ladin specialities await you on the sun terrace! Brave adventurers have the possibility to continue the trail over the Passo Limo, with a magnificent and rewarding view over the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. After a rest on the banks of the shimmering and green Limo Lake, we cycle back to the Fanes Hut and return along the same path to the Gassenwirt.

Bike events in South Tyrol – always something going on!

Do you prefer riding your bike or cheering on your idols? From May to September, cycling fans in South Tyrol have plenty of opportunity to do both.
Test your fitness at the MARATONA DLES DOLOMITES, the biggest racing bike event in the Dolomites, conquer four Dolomite passes in one day at the SELLARONDA BIKE DAY or compete against cycling pros at the HERO Südtirol Dolomites race.
